The International Federation of Orthopaedic Manual/Manipulative Physical Therapy is an international, nongovernmental organization, responsible for directing the Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy worldwide.

The IFOMPT is a subgroup acknowledged by the WCPT (World Confederation of Physical Therapy).

 

History

IFOMPT was created at the beginning of the 70s by a group of physical therapists experts in manual therapy that noticed the need of a discussion forum at an international level in order to discuss the issues related with this kind of physical therapy. Among the founding members of this organization important experts of this field such as Stanley Paris, David Lamb, Gregory Grieve, Brian Edwards, Freddy Kaltenborn or Geoffrey Maitland.

Composition

IFOMPT is basically formed by groups of manual physical therapists worldwide acknowledged at a national level, which have developed a demanding post-graduate training program in the Orthopaedic Manual Therapy field, based on educational standards established by the federation.

This groups, acknowledged by IFOMPT as federation members are the OMT representatives of each country. This way, OMT-Spain is a member of IFOMPT, and that is why it is the Spanish reference body in the Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy (OMT) field.

 

Mission

Since its creation, IFOMPT has decided to wordwide promote the unity and excellence of certain standards' application, by all the manual physical therapists, at an educational level and in the clinical practice. This standards, established by the own federation, have the aim of offering the best possible treatment to those patients with dysfunctions at a neuro-musculo-eskeletal level.


Objectives

IFOMPT marks, through its activity, the following objectives, stated in its constituent documents:

  • Encourage the development of the quality standards in the training and in the clinical practice of the Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy (OMT) worldwide.
  • Promote appropriate means of communication and information exchange in relation to further developments within manual therapy.
  • Promote scientific research and the diffusion of new developments taking place in the field of OMT.
  • Organize, in regular intervals, seminars or other events to address current issues in relation to the field of manual therapy.
  • Representing Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy (OMT) internationally, and promoting evidence-based practice in OMT.
